170 2002 Chateau Musar Red, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon 14% £ 18.99 A cool spring, lasting until June, then a mild July and hot August, resulted in a lengthy ripening period and a relatively late harvest in 2002. Fermentation was slow, and the wines very ripe and full. Fermented in cement vats, Chateau Musar Red 2002 was seven years in the making, with 12 months in Nevers oak before blending and bottling. As with all the ‘Chateau’ wines, decanting is beneficial. Serve at 18°C with roasts, casseroles, game or mature cheeses.
171 2003 Chateau Musar White, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon 12% £ 16.39 Seven years in the making, this blend of Obaideh and Merwah (the ancestors of Chardonnay and Semillon) was fermented in French barrels for 9 months, then blended and bottled at the end of its first year. Toasty, nutty and honeyed, yet fresh, the style has been likened to mature white Graves such as Haut-Brion. Decant and ‘serve cellar cool’ (15°C) with seafood, pâtés, fruits or desserts.
172 2002 Hochar Père e Fils Red, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon 13.5% £ 10.45 Cinsault-based, plus Cabernet, Carignan and Grenache, this robust red hails from a 35-year-old single vineyard near Aana, with deep soils over limestone. Ripening was prolonged in 2002 by a mild winter and summer, leading to concentrated flavours. Fermented in cement vats, it was aged for 5 years, with 6-9 months in Nevers oak.
